Dave McLauchlan, senior business development manager for Zune, insisted that the iPod didn’t kill the Zune in a semi-official statement posted to the AnythingButiPod forums. He reminded that “all consumer electronics products have a lifespan, and the Zune HD is 18 months old” while promising new apps and games....

Microsoft and Facebook have announced that they will be changing the pistol emoji from a realistic-looking handgun to a water pistol. Google yesterday made the same decision, all following the lead Apple set two years ago … Apple swapped out the pistol emoji for a water pistol in iOS 10 back in 2016. Apple had also led the way in opposing a proposal to add a rifle character. Samsung and Twitter both followed Apple’s example earlier this year, and Google’s decision yesterday left Facebook and Microsoft the only remaining big tech holdouts....

Microsoft confirms server misconfiguration led to 65,000+ companies’ data leak This week marks the second month of bad news for Microsoft, who, after seeing cybercriminals compromise its Exchange Servers last month, saw an unintentional endpoint misconfiguration expose the information of thousands of customers. The Windows creator did not reveal the extent of the data leak, but SOCRadar says it affects more than 65,000 firms in 111 countries, with the exposure amounting to 2....

The interval between Apple being accused of wrong-doing and the first lawsuit is never very long, but the revelation that the company was deliberately slowing older iPhones appears to have resulted in a record number of cases. Last time we counted, there were 30 separate cases, and that number has now almost doubled. However, a meeting tomorrow aims to combine all the US cases into a single class action lawsuit …...

Microsoft has just announced that they are purchasing Nokia’s devices and services divisions. Nokia has been the main manufacturer of Windows Phone 8 devices, and it looks like Microsoft will be using this acquisition to further merge their software and hardware engineering and design. In a joint statement from (outgoing) Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, the two executives stated, “Today’s agreement will accelerate the momentum of Nokia’s devices and services, bringing the world’s most innovative smartphones to more people, while continuing to connect the next billion people with Nokia’s mobile phone portfolio....

Sure, you could argue that Microsoft’s shiny new Office apps for iPad are only ranking so well because they’re freemium apps since they’re listed for free but require a subscription to fully function, but they are taking up the top four spots nonetheless. Metrolinx has started adding Apple Pay support on Toronto’s Up Express. For the same price as the PRESTO adult fare, UP Express customers can tap on a PRESTO device using Apple Pay with a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express credit card as a part of a pilot. The UP Express connects Downtown Toronto with Toronto Pearson International Airport. People can use Apple Pay as other contactless payments, such as Google Pay and credit cards with NFC support....
